Eden Adopts Oberon Class Submarine HMAS Onslow
Between 1979 and 1981, the Australian Navy’s Oberon class submarine, HMAS Onslow visited Eden on three occasions. The visits by the Onslow not only reaped financial benefits for Eden, but firm friendships were made between the submariners and the townspeople of Eden.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the formal adoption of the Onslow on 24 January 1981. The adoption ceremony took place at Snug Cove Wharf, Eden and was held as part of the Back to Eden celebrations which commemorated Eden Killer Whale Museum’s 50th anniversary. The exhibition showcases photographs from museum’s Magnet Newspaper Photographic collection, as well as recent local acquisitions and donations from the National Maritime Museum, which is the Onslow’s current home.
The newest attraction, a small replica of the submarine, will be on display so kids can climb aboard. What’s best of all, a working replica periscope is on board for kids to conduct their own spying operation!
The museum is open Monday to Saturday 9.15am to 3.45 pm and Sundays 11.15am – 3.45pm
